Jerry Summers: Majors And Mannings - Tennessee Football Families

23+ hour, 40+ min ago (437+ words) In May 2020, an article was published in the chatanoogan.com on the Majors" family as the historically most famous football clan in the Volunteer State. It follows in its entirety: "Little did he know, while he was cutting hair as a barber or farming in Lynchburg, that he, Shirley Majors (1913-1981) would become the patriarch of Tennessee"s most famous football family. The Tennessee Coal Mining Company, operating and leasing out a number of the mines in the Cumberland Mountain area, rejected the demands and, on April 1, 1891, simply shut their mines, sending all the miners home without wages. Two months later, the mine owners agreed to reopen the mines if the miners would sign an iron-clad contract authorizing scrip, company stores, company-employed weigh agents and more. The miners refused. By July 1891, as the mines remained idle, the mine owners signed a contract with Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Company [TCI], located west of Chattanooga, which subleased Tennessee convicts to smaller companies. The Tennessee Coal Mining Company immediately tore down the miners" houses and built a stockade for…...
